Gate street barn wedding photographer A country wedding with a twist, Nancy and Mohammed had devised two days of celebrations, the first a religious ceremony and the second, this shindig at Gate Street Barn in the Surrey Hills, a striking oldy-worldy oak framed barn that came alive under Nancy’s artful taste.

They are an innovative couple, their day an incredible fusion of the contemporary and the classic with the over-arching country vintage theme of a relaxed rural vibe with friends and family uniting everything perfectly. Great 21st century tweaks included Mo having a groomsLADY (Vic, a close work colleague) and Nancy having a MANmaid (new word, you heard it here first) an old friend from university who also took on the role of MC for the day. AND Mo himself walked his bride down the aisle, going to meet her in her full bridal glory from where she was getting ready and escorting her to the wedding. A wonderful moment to document.

Nancy’s dress was designed online by Dreamers and Lovers, a gorgeous vintage lace gown with capped sleeves and a beautiful full-length veil. Hair and makeup was the work of Kerry Lucey who probably should also moonlight as a mind reader given her ability to give brides exactly the look they are hoping for. Ditto, the flowers by Gill Pike, about who Nancy raved for being able to interpret her brief and vision for the floral decs perfectly. In the run-up to the wedding, Nancy and her mum Juliet had spent ages making paper flowers to decorate the barn with and the array of flowers complemented each other wonderfully – all the hard work of these talented ladies coming together to look incredible. The use of sparklers and abundant fairy lights really made for a great ambience for the photos after the sun had set and props like confetti and a homemade photo booth are always fun to shoot and give a real sense of the fun and emotion of the day.

I had a great time capturing the bridal party all getting ready as Nancy’s sister Rossy is an old work chum of mine and it was she who put me in touch with Nancy to be her photographer. Rossy’s twin boys, Jonah and Evan, caused much laughter as Paige boys, their job to sprinkle rose petals down the aisle as Mo and Nancy left the ceremony room. Despite repeat practice at home they simply tipped them all over the floor in one heap. Kids and animals ay? Great, great photo though!

As it should be for any bride, the day had all the things that Nancy loved. A connoisseur of gin and a great baker, guests were treated to indulge at Nancy’s gin parlour and there was a Bake-Off table for guests to bring cakes along, surrounding her main wedding cake by Jo Turner, making for a huge selection of sweet treats for everyone to tuck in to. Energy for dancing!

There were no speeches – GASP! Yes, NO speeches! What kind people Mo and Nancy are! Instead, after the meal, they organised a game to play where they selected eight players and set tasks for them to collect items from other wedding guests around the room. Every time they got up to complete a task (e.g. collect a sock, collect a lipstick…) a chair was removed – effectively a grown-up version of musical chairs that, as you can imagine, turned into raucous fun PDQ.

Pretty hard to beat!
